Add page numbers
Add Page Numbers to a PDF Online (Free)
Page numbers make long documents easier to read, discuss and print in order. Many PDFs – scans, merged files, exports – have none.
Adding them takes seconds.
How to add page numbers
- Open the Add page numbers tool.
- Drop the PDF in.
- Choose position and format.
- Set the starting number, size and margin if needed.
- Click Add numbers & Download.
Options
- Positions: bottom centre/right/left, top centre/right/left.
- Formats: 1 · Page 1 · Page 1 of 10 · 1 / 10.
- Start at any number.
- Skip numbering the first page (cover).
Examples
- Report with cover: Don’t number the first page, start at 1, bottom centre.
- Contract: Page 1 of 10, bottom right, size 9.
- Merged bundle: 1 / 10 for easy reference in emails.
Numbers for merged documents
When you merge several PDFs, original page numbers restart in each part. Adding fresh numbers across the whole merged file gives reviewers one consistent reference, such as “see page 14”.
Printing tips
Printers cannot print right to the edge. Keep a margin of at least 8 mm so numbers are not cut off, and print at Actual size rather than Fit to page so the numbers stay where you placed them.
Good practice
Bottom centre or bottom right are the most readable. Keep a margin of 8–12 mm so numbers are not cut off when printing.
