HSN Codes on GST Invoices: What Sellers Need to Know
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods; SAC codes classify services. GST invoices show them for each item.
The number of digits required depends on your turnover and type of supply.
Finding your HSN
Use the HSN search on the GST portal or your product’s existing invoices from suppliers. Apparel, for example, falls in chapters 61 and 62.
How many digits
Turnover-based rules decide whether you show 4, 6 or 8 digits. Check the current notification or ask your accountant.
Examples for apparel sellers
- Knitted garments generally fall under chapter 61.
- Woven garments generally fall under chapter 62.
- The exact code depends on fabric, type and who the garment is for.
Why the right HSN matters
The HSN decides the GST rate and appears in your returns. A wrong code can mean the wrong tax rate on invoices and corrections later. When unsure, ask your accountant or check how your supplier classifies the item.
Keep a list
Maintain a simple sheet of your products with their HSN and GST rate, so every invoice uses the same code for the same product.
Services
If you sell services such as photography or packing, use SAC codes, which also start with 99. The same invoice generator accepts SAC codes in the HSN column.
Adding HSN in the tool
In the GST invoice generator, enter the HSN code in each item row. It appears in the item table of the printed invoice.
