Code 128 vs EAN Barcodes: Which Should Sellers Use?

Updated 27 October 2026 · 2 min read · By the LabelCroppers team

Sellers meet two barcode families: Code 128, which can encode any SKU text, and EAN-13, the 13-digit retail barcode linked to registered GTINs.

Choosing the right one avoids confusion with marketplaces.

Code 128

  • Encodes letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Ideal for your own SKUs and warehouse labels.
  • Used for Amazon FNSKU labels.

EAN-13

  • 13 digits, issued through GS1 registration.
  • Used as a product identifier (GTIN) on marketplaces that require it.
  • Do not invent EAN numbers – use ones you are allowed to use.

Which one for which job

  • Warehouse bins and stock counting – Code 128 with your SKU.
  • Amazon FBA units – the FNSKU label (Code 128) from Seller Central or the FNSKU generator.
  • Retail shelves and some marketplace listings – registered EAN/GTIN.

Keep barcodes scannable

Leave white space on both sides of the bars, print at 100% scale, and avoid very long SKUs that make the barcode too dense for small labels. Test one label with a phone scanner app before printing in bulk.

Getting EAN codes

If a marketplace asks for a GTIN, apply through GS1 India or use the codes provided by the brand owner. Some marketplaces allow an exemption for unbranded or private-label goods; check the current rules in your seller panel.

Printing either

Use the SKU & MRP sticker maker for SKU stickers. For EAN, print only codes you have registered or received from the brand owner.
