How to Reduce Returns and RTO on Meesho

Updated 27 October 2026 · 3 min read · By the LabelCroppers team

Returns and RTO (return to origin) are the biggest hidden costs on Meesho. Each one costs shipping both ways and lowers your quality metrics, which can reduce visibility.

Know the two kinds

Customer returns happen after delivery – wrong size, not as expected, quality issues. RTO happens when the parcel is not delivered – often COD refusals or unreachable customers. Both cost you.

Reduce customer returns

  • Show true colours and real fabric close-ups.
  • Give size charts with measurements, not just S/M/L.
  • Check quality before packing – loose threads, stains, defects.
  • Describe exactly what is included.

Reduce RTO

  • Dispatch quickly – the longer the delay, the more customers change their minds.
  • Where available, restrict COD on pincodes with repeated refusals.
  • Avoid misleading images that create impulse orders.

Packaging

Damaged packages become returns. Use proper polybags or boxes, seal well, and do the "shake test" for items that might break.

Deactivate problem products

If a product's return rate stays high after fixes, deactivate it. It is hurting your account health.

Measuring return cost

Calculate return rate per product and the cost of each return (forward + reverse shipping + any damage). A product with a 30% return rate at a low price may be losing money even if it gets many orders. Fix it or remove it.

Customer communication

Clear product details set expectations. Mention fabric thickness, transparency, stretch and exact colour where relevant. "Not as expected" is mostly an information problem.

Learning loop

Review returns weekly, note the top reasons, and apply fixes to images, size charts, quality checks and packaging. Track whether the return rate improves over the next month.

Size charts for Meesho shoppers

Many Meesho shoppers buy without a measuring tape at hand. Show measurements in inches, give a simple tip such as "measure a kurti you already own and compare", and show the model's height and size where you use model images. For free-size products, state the bust or waist range they fit. These steps prevent many "size not fitting" returns.

Checklist

  • Return reasons analysed
  • Quality check before packing
  • Size charts improved
  • COD controls used
  • High-return products removed
