How to Reduce Returns on Amazon India and Handle Return Claims

Updated 27 October 2026 · 3 min read · By the LabelCroppers team

Every return costs you shipping twice, often a damaged product, and sometimes a rating. In fashion, returns can be the biggest hidden cost. The good news: most returns have a small number of fixable causes.

Find out why products come back

Download the returns report from Seller Central and group returns by reason and by SKU. A single size or colour often accounts for a large share. Read customer comments – "too small", "colour different", "quality not as shown" each point to a specific fix.

Fix sizing

  • Give measurements in centimetres and inches for each size (chest, waist, length).
  • Explain how to measure and whether to size up.
  • Put the size chart in an image as well as in text.
  • If a product runs small, say so clearly.

Fix expectations

Photos should match the real colour under neutral light. Show texture close-ups and the product on a model or in use. Mention exactly what is included in the pack.

Fix packing errors

Wrong-item and wrong-size returns are packing errors. Stamp the SKU on every label, pick by SKU, and check the label against the product before sealing. Record a short packing video for high-value orders – it helps with claims.

SAFE-T claims for damaged or wrong returns

If a customer returns a used, damaged or different product, file a SAFE-T claim within the allowed time with photos, packing videos and the order details. Keep your evidence organised by order ID so you can respond quickly.

Reduce RTO on Easy Ship

Return-to-origin happens when the parcel is not delivered – often COD refusals. Clear listings, accurate delivery dates and fast dispatch reduce cancellations and refusals.

Category-specific return fixes

  • Clothing: size chart per style, model height in images, fabric feel described.
  • Footwear: foot-length chart and advice on wide feet.
  • Kidswear: age plus height and chest; note whether the fit is relaxed or slim.
  • Jewellery and accessories: exact dimensions with a reference object in a photo.
  • Home textiles: exact measurements and thread count, colour under daylight.

Inspect and grade returns quickly

Open returns within a day or two, on camera if possible. Grade each item: resellable, resellable after re-packing, damaged, or wrong item. Restock good items quickly so they are not lost in storage, and file claims for the rest within the allowed window.

Packaging that survives transit

Use polybags with sealable flaps for clothing, add a cardboard insert for structured garments, and use boxes for fragile items. A product that arrives crushed or dirty becomes a "damaged" return even when the product itself was fine.

Learning from returns

Review return reasons monthly with whoever designs and sources products. Sometimes the best fix is to discontinue a style or size with persistently high returns rather than keep paying for them.
