How to Sell on Amazon India: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Amazon.in is the marketplace most Indian shoppers search first, which makes it the natural starting point for many brands. The flip side is competition: thousands of sellers list similar products, and Amazon rewards accounts that are organised from day one.
This guide walks through the whole journey – from the documents you need, to your first listing, your first order and the habits that get a new account to steady daily sales.
What you need before you register
Keep these ready so registration takes one sitting instead of a week:
- GSTIN for most categories (some categories such as books may allow sellers without GST – check the category rules in Seller Central).
- PAN of the business or proprietor.
- Bank account in the business name, with a cancelled cheque or account details.
- Business address and pickup address – for Easy Ship the pickup address is where couriers collect parcels.
- A mobile number and email you will use only for the seller account.
- Optional but valuable: a trademark application for your brand, which later unlocks Brand Registry.
Registering on Seller Central
Registration is free and starts at sell.amazon.in. You will verify your phone and email, enter business and tax details, add a bank account, set a store name and complete identity verification. Use the same legal name everywhere – a mismatch between GST, PAN and bank records is the most common reason verification gets stuck.
Pick a store name that matches your brand. Customers see it on the offer, and a consistent name across Amazon, Flipkart and your own website builds trust.
Choose how you will fulfil orders
Amazon India offers three main options, and you can mix them product by product:
- Easy Ship – you store and pack; Amazon's courier picks up and delivers. The best starting point for most new sellers.
- Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) – you send stock to an Amazon fulfilment centre; Amazon stores, packs, ships and handles returns. Products usually become Prime-eligible.
- Self Ship – you ship through your own courier. Useful for oversized or special items.
Start with Easy Ship to learn demand and return rates without locking money in warehouse stock, then move your proven best sellers to FBA. Our FBA vs Easy Ship vs Self Ship guide compares them in detail.
Create your first listings
If the product already exists on Amazon (same brand, same item), you add an offer to the existing listing. If it is your own brand, you create a new listing with a title, bullet points, description, images, price and stock. Listing quality is the biggest lever you control – see our Amazon listing guide.
Begin with 5–15 products you can always keep in stock. A small catalog that never goes out of stock grows faster than a big catalog with frequent cancellations.
Price for profit, not just for the Buy Box
Work out every cost before you set a price: product cost, packaging, Amazon fees, shipping fee, GST, expected returns and advertising. Since 16 March 2026 Amazon India charges zero referral fee on products priced under ₹1,000 in over 1,800 categories, which makes low-priced items far more viable than before – but closing and shipping fees still apply. Our fees guide shows how to calculate the final payout.
Your first 30 days
- Dispatch every order on time – late dispatch hurts account health immediately.
- Run a small Sponsored Products campaign on each product to get first impressions and sales.
- Ask every buyer for a review using Amazon's "Request a review" button (never offer incentives).
- Check the Business Reports weekly: sessions, conversion rate and which products sell.
- Print clean 4×6 labels with the SKU on them so packing errors stay at zero – the Amazon label crop does this automatically.
Choosing what to sell first
The best first products are ones you can source reliably, that are light and hard to break, and that have clear demand on Amazon already. Type your product idea into the Amazon search bar and study the first page: how many reviews do the top listings have, what are their prices, and what do their 1–3 star reviews complain about? If the top results have thousands of reviews and very low prices, it will be expensive to compete. If the top results have a few hundred reviews and obvious weaknesses – poor images, vague size charts, complaints about quality – there is room for a better product.
Avoid restricted or gated categories at the start unless you already have the approvals and documents they require. Categories such as certain health products, toys (which need BIS certification in India) and branded electronics come with extra checks.
Setting up your workspace and process
Even a one-person business needs a simple process. Keep stock in labelled bins by SKU, keep packing material near the packing table, and print labels once a day at a fixed time. Decide who checks each order before sealing. These small habits are what keep cancellation and wrong-item rates low when orders grow from five a day to five hundred.
Use a simple spreadsheet for every SKU: cost, price, Amazon fees, stock on hand, reorder level and supplier. You will use it every week to decide pricing, ads and purchasing.
Mistakes new Amazon sellers make
- Listing too many products at once and running out of stock on the few that sell.
- Copying competitor images or text – this can lead to IP complaints.
- Ignoring account health notifications in the first weeks.
- Turning ads off after a week because ACoS looks high – new products need data before campaigns become efficient.
- Underestimating returns in fashion and pricing too low to absorb them.
- Using personal email or phone for the account and losing access later.
After the first 30 days
Once orders are flowing, apply for Brand Registry (if you have a trademark application), add A+ content, move best sellers to FBA, and plan for the next big sale event. Our 90-day growth plan lays out what to do next in order.

Free tools for Amazon sellers
The Amazon label crop with SKU stamping on LabelCroppers crops Easy Ship and Self Ship labels to 4×6, reads the SKU and quantity from each invoice and prints them on the label, sorts orders by SKU and builds a picklist. Pair it with the FBA FNSKU sticker generator and the FBA box label tool for FBA shipments. Everything runs in your browser – your orders and customer data are never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Amazon seller registration take?
If all documents match, registration and verification usually finish within a few days. Mismatched names between GST, PAN and bank are the most common cause of delay.
Do I need a brand to sell on Amazon?
No. You can sell products of other brands you are authorised to sell. Owning a brand (with a trademark) lets you create your own listings, join Brand Registry and use A+ content.
Is selling on Amazon India profitable?
It can be, if you price with every fee, return and ad cost included. The 2026 zero referral fee on items under ₹1,000 has improved margins for many low-priced categories.
